Life

Stanley O'Neal is the son of a small cotton farmer and a cleaning lady. He grew up in Wedowee , a village in Alabama , until he was twelve . There he also went to school, a school that his grandfather had built as a slave. His family, he had three younger siblings, then moved to Atlanta . His father got a job there at General Motors , which gave O'Neal the opportunity to work at GM. There he was briefly foreman and was able to graduate from the General Motors Institute (now Kettering University) with a bachelor's degree in 1974 . At the end of the 1970s he received a grant from General Motors to attend Harvard University , which he left in 1978 with a Master of Business Administration . After graduating, he worked in General Motors' finance department before joining Merrill Lynch in 1986. There he was responsible for the capital market and managing director for investment banking and head of the financial services group. In 1998 he became Merrill Lynch's Chief Financial Officer . He became Chief Executive Officer in December 2002 and Chairman of the Company in April of the following year .

In late October 2007, Stan O'Neal had to resign - one reason was not given, but it is believed that this is directly related to the largest quarterly losses in Merrill Lynch's history. His retirement package of stocks, options, and pension obligations was over $ 160 million and his 2007 earnings were approximately $ 46 million.
