Stanisław Ostoja-Chrostowski
Stanislaw Ostoja-Chrostowski (* 14. December 1900 in Warsaw , Russian Empire ; † 19th November 1947 ) was a Polish commercial artist and wood carver and art teacher.
Life
During the First World War he was a member of the Polish Military Organization . In 1918 he worked in the Polish diplomatic mission in Moscow. In December 1918 he was arrested on charges of espionage and released in 1921 as part of a prisoner exchange. He started his studies at the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He studied painting with Tadeusz Pruszkowski , woodcut with Władysław Skoczylas and commercial art with Edmund Bartłomiejczyk . After the death of Władysław Skoczylas, he took over his chair for applied graphics at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in 1937 .
During the Second World War he was active underground in the intelligence service of the Polish Home Army . After the war he helped reactivate the Warsaw Art Academy and was elected rector.
In addition to the woodcut, he dealt with commercial graphics. Ostoja-Chrostowski Designed Book graphics, stamps , calligraphy and typography , bookplates and commercial art .
From 1929 he was a member of the artist group "Ryt". He illustrated books and published his works in the Poznan literary magazine "Tęcza".
Ostoja-Chrostowski was Anna's husband (1897–1978) and the father of Halina Chrostowska (1929–1990), an etcher, graphic artist and teacher at the Warsaw Art Academy.
