Stanisław Skalski (born November 27, 1915 in Kodyma , † November 12, 2004 in Warsaw ) was a Polish fighter pilot and officer in the Polish Air Force during World War II .

Stanisław Skalski was the most successful Polish fighter pilot in World War II. He fought first in September 1939, then as a Royal Air Force pilot in the Battle of Britain , in North Africa and finally on the Western Front in France. He achieved a total of 20 confirmed and 2 unconfirmed aerial victories and was awarded Virtuti Militari , Distinguished Service Order and Distinguished Flying Cross , among others .

After the war he returned to Poland in 1947 and was again active in the Polish Air Force. In 1948 Skalski was arrested by the communist regime and charged with espionage . From October 1948 to July 1949 he was ill-treated and subjected to several interrogations and finally sentenced to death in 1950 . In the following year, however, he was pardoned, released in 1956 and rehabilitated. He then worked again in the Polish Air Force, but no longer as a pilot, but in the office. In 1988 he was promoted to brigadier general.

In 1957 his book "Czarne krzyże nad Polską" ( Black Crosses over Poland ) was published. In 1986 Jacek Bławut made the documentary Cyrk Skalskiego about Skalski.
