Stanislaw Dospewski
Stanislaw Dospewski ( Bulgarian Станислав Доспевски ; born December 3, 1823 in Samokow , † December 23, 1877 in Istanbul ) was a Bulgarian painter .
Life
He was born the son of the famous icon painter Dimityr Sograf . The equally well-known painter Sachari Sograf was his uncle. Dospewski graduated from the Art Academy in Saint Petersburg in 1856 . He lived in Pazardzhik and was involved in the Bulgarian liberation movement against the Ottoman Empire . Dospewski was arrested and died in prison in 1877.
He created a variety of icons for Bulgarian monasteries and churches. In addition, he painted around 30 portraits of Bulgarian patriots. He is considered a pioneer of secular realistic painting in Bulgaria. His house in Pazardzhik was later converted into a museum.
