Vehicle Stanley

Stanley is a self-driving car from Stanford University's Stanford Racing Team , which won the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge . Professor Sebastian Thrun's team was able to collect prize money of 2 million US dollars, making it the largest prize in a robotics competition to date . Stanley is specially designed for competition.

Stanley is a modified VW Touareg . To perceive the surroundings, the vehicle was equipped with five LIDAR sensors from Sick AG , as well as a camera and a GPS system. In addition, the wheels have been upgraded to record odometry information in the event of a lost GPS signal . Stanley was equipped with six low-cost PCs with 1.6 GHz processors for data processing.

Stanley's successor within the Stanford Racing Team is the modified Volkswagen Passat " Junior ", which came second in the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge .
