Stanley Lai (physicist)

Stanley Lai , also Stan Lai , (* 1977 ) is a Canadian-German particle physicist and director of the Second Physics Institute at the Georg-August University in Göttingen .

Lai studied engineering and physics at the University of Toronto , where he received his doctorate in physics in 2007 with a dissertation that he carried out at Fermilab ( Search for Standard Model Higgs Boson Produced in Association with a Top Anti-top Quark Pair in 1.96 TeV Proton - Anti- proton collisions ). From 2006 to 2011 he worked as a postdoc and from 2011 as an academic advisor at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and has been a full professor at the Second Physics Institute of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen since 2015 .

His research area is experimental particle physics. His research group is particularly concerned with the physics of the Higgs boson (precision measurements to determine its properties and indications from this on physics beyond the standard model ) and the symmetry breaking of the electroweak interaction mediated by the Higgs as part of the ATLAS collaboration at CERN in Geneva . For example, he investigated tau leptons (and typical characteristics in detectors for their decay into hadrons, for example) as an indication of physics beyond the Standard Model, for example as an indication of the Higgs bosons (one neutral as in the Standard Model, two charged) according to the MSSM . In this context he developed reconstruction algorithms for tau lepton decays from the atlas data. By the beginning of 2018, Lai had contributed to over 800 scientific publications (mainly those by Atlas and CDF with numerous other scientists), including the first observation of the Higgs boson in the ATLAS experiment, and he also published four articles as the sole author.

Before joining ATLAS, he was part of the CDF collaboration at Fermilab .
