The Stara Papiernia (German: Alte Papierfabrik ) is a modern shopping center in a historical building complex in the Polish city of Konstancin-Jeziorna near Warsaw . The center, which opened in 2002, is located in the listed buildings of a paper mill from the 19th century.

location

The shopping center is located in the center of Konstancin on Rondo Jana Pawla II and is surrounded by Ulica Warszawska and Aleja Wojska Polskiego streets . In the north, the Jeziorka , a tributary of the Vistula , flows past the center. Directly south of the complex flows - partly underground - a feeder channel to today's paper mill “Konstans” , which is located around 1000 meters east.

history

The plant goes back to a water mill-driven paper mill that was built nearby in 1760. This plant was the oldest paper mill in Mazovia . The factory bore the title of a “Royal Paper Mill” ( Królewska Fabryka Papieru ). King Stanisław August Poniatowski only used Konstancin paper. Documents of the four-year-old Sejm and the constitution of May 3, 1791 were also written on the paper of the old factory. Also took advantage of Tadeusz Kosciuszko this paper. Józef Krzyczewski was the owner. In 1830 it became the property of Bank Polski .

In the 1830s the old mill could no longer be operated competitively. The specialist Gabriel Planche was recruited from France, who took over the management of the plant from Piotr Łubieński in 1836. It was decided to build a new building for the installation of a machine for the production of continuous paper, which had been acquired in Vienna in 1832 with funds from Bank Polski and had not been used until then. In connection with this, the water propulsion system also had to be modernized.

Between 1836 and 1838 a new factory was built according to plans by Jan Jakub Gay . The required land had been acquired by the Potulicki family. A working duct was derived from the Jeziorka to drive water turbines in the new factory building. This canal still exists today - it leads below and at the old factory building to the water basins of the Konstans paper mill. The daily newspaper "Kurier Warszawski" was printed on the factory's newsprint. In the 1860s, Bank Polski sold the factory to the Roesler family.

In the middle of the 19th century, a new paper mill had already been built at the old location about a kilometer east due to the lack of options for expansion. The new factory (today: Konstans ) was from now on called "Dolna Papiernia" ( Lower Paper Mill ), the old one as "Górna Papiernia" ( Upper Paper Mill ). The Mirków paper mill ( Towarzystwo Akcyjne Mirkowskiej Fabryki Papieru ) took over both plants from the Roesler family in 1869 . The main shareholders of this company were Edward Natanson and the banker Leopold Stanisław Kronenberg .

The old factory lost its importance and was only used as storage and for the pre-treatment of rags for pulp production. That is why it was given the name "Szmaciarni" by the local residents (the Polish expression "Szmatka" corresponds to the meaning "rag" or "scrap"). On August 9, 1958, the factory was placed under monument protection (No. 1040/149).

In 1984 the old paper mill, which was then unused, burned down. It remained in ruins until October 2000, when the investor Jan Wejchert began to restore the former factories into a shopping center. The architectural office responsible was Bulanda i Mucha (BiM). The center opened on November 23, 2002.

shopping mall

The center consists of two building complexes. In the three-storey complex A (former factory building) there are around 35 traders, mainly restaurants, cafes, boutiques and service providers. The single-storey building complex B (old warehouses) houses a Carrefour supermarket, a Rossmann drugstore and various other food providers. A multi-purpose stage was temporarily set up in the courtyard; concerts and other cultural events were held here until the opening of the new amphitheater in the spa gardens. Old paper-making machines are exhibited throughout the area.
