Jan Bohdan Wejchert (born January 5, 1950 - October 31, 2009 ) was a Polish businessman and media entrepreneur. He was one of the founders of the ITI media group and was involved as an investor in various other companies and construction projects. Wejchert was one of the ten richest Poles in 2007.

Life

Wejchert went on III. Liceum Ogólnokształcące in Gdansk to school. He graduated from the Warsaw University Faculty of Economics . In 1968 he visited England, France, Switzerland and Italy. In 1974 he started working for the Frankfurt trading company Konsuprod GmbH & Co. Two years later he founded the company's Polish subsidiary, one of the first foreign direct investments in socialist Poland. This company mainly sold video recorders imported from India.

In 1984, Wejchert and Mariusz Walter founded the ITI Group (International Trading and Investment), which was initially active in the manufacture of potato chips . Wejchert was the company's managing director. Another partner since 1991 was Bruno Valsangiacomo. In 1997 Wejchert co-founded the Polish television network TVN . He was a board member and later a member of the supervisory board of the broadcasting group. He was also involved in other investments of the ITI group, such as the Internet portal Onet.pl , in whose management he was also active. He was also a co-owner of the Warsaw football club Legia Warsaw . In 2007 he stepped down from his roles at TVN.

In March 2008, following Wejchert's complaint, the Warsaw District Court ruled that the politician Antoni Macierewicz did not have to apologize to the plaintiff because of his allegation of Wejchert's alleged connections with the Polish military espionage service ( Wojskowe Służby Informacyjne ), as Macierewicz did not have to apologize as a private person as a civil servant. Instead, the Polish Ministry of Defense (Ministerstwo Obrony Narodowej ) had to apologize to Wejchert for the false assertion .

Wejchert was active in the construction sector with his company Wejchert Investments, for example in the renovation of the dilapidated Sobański Palace , which Wejchert acquired in 1996, and the conversion of the former Stara Papiernia paper mill in Konstancin-Jeziorna into a shopping center. The “Wejchert Golf Club” was to be built in the town of Brześce near Warsaw. Robert Trent Jones Jr. was won as the designer of the golf course. The project included the planned construction of 49 houses and was estimated at an investment volume of around 250 million zloty . The ground work began in 2018, the death of Webert prevented completion. The site remained unused for several years, in 2013 the liquidation was opened via Wejchert Golf Club Sp z oo .

In 2007 the Polish weekly Wprost listed Wejchert as the eighth richest Poles. His fortune was estimated at 3.6 billion zloty . He was ranked 897 in Forbes magazine's 2008 list of The World's Billionaires, with an estimated fortune of $ 1.3 billion

Wejchert was married to Aldona Weichert and had five children. His son Łukasz Wejchert became a member of the TVN management and was responsible for the development of the Onet Internet portal. Jan Wejchert lived in Konstancin-Jeziorna, a suburb of Warsaw, until his death. He died in 2009 at the age of 59 of a heart attack preceded by bacterial infection and sepsis . He had been suffering from leukemia since 1993 .

Awards and honorary positions

In 1991 Wejchert was appointed to the US-Poland Action Commission under Zbigniew Brzeziński . Wejchert was also a co-founder of the Polska Rada Biznesu and headed this organization as its first chairman. Today this club is one of the most influential private employer organizations in Poland. In 1998, Aleksander Kwaśniewski awarded Wejchert the Order of Polonia Restituta . Already posthumously - in October 2010 - the “Nagroda PRB im. Jana Wejcherta ”(German: Jan Wejchert Prize of the PRB ) donated in honor of Wejchert.
