Stare Żabno (German Alt Tschau , 1937–1945 Trockenau ) is a former municipality in the Polish Lebus Voivodeship . Today it belongs to Nowa Sól , the district town of Powiat Nowosolski .

history

The area around Stare Żabno has been inhabited since the Stone Age. Stone tools from around 8000 to 6000 BC have been found in the community area. These are also the oldest evidence of human habitation in the Nova Sol area. Finds also confirm a settlement during the Lusatian culture . Remains of a cremation were found from that time .

The place itself is first mentioned in 1295 as Sczhabna Antiqua . The name shows that the place existed before the German settlement in the east . It was probably on an old trade route between Krosno and Glogau . Like almost everywhere, the rule changed several times over the years. Those from Kottwitz (occupied before 1518), von Promnitz (after 1518), von Landkron (approx. 1699), von Lüttwitz (approx. 1730) and von Nassau were among those who were wealthy .

In 1791 the place was divided into three lords. The von Siegroth family received a part with an inn, two farms and other buildings with a total of 116 inhabitants. In 1786 a Protestant school was opened in their area . 137 inhabitants lived in the area of von Lüttwitz. Most of the place with most of the buildings belonged to Dingelstädt. The total of 75 buildings with 137 inhabitants also included two mills that have been mentioned since the 16th century (a wind mill and a water mill ). Around 1850 the division still existed with other liege lords. A total of 650 residents lived in the three dominions. Friedrich Wilhelm von Schönknecht had built a castle in the village that is no longer preserved today. The evangelical school continued to exist and there was a customs house in the village .

In the second half of the 19th century, a volunteer fire brigade was founded and the place grew together with the neighboring Nowa Sol (then Neusalz an der Oder ), in particular through the construction of workers' apartments for the textile works JD Gruschwitz & Söhne oHG . At the beginning of the 20th century, an inn with a large dance hall, which was also used for film screenings, was built. In 1905 the place had residents in 2013.

In 1908, in addition to the main town of the same name, the district of Alt Tschau included the towns of Költsch, Neu Tschau, Mittel Alt Tschau and Ober Alt Tschau.

The place belonged to the district of Freystadt i. Lower Silesian.

In 1937, the place was renamed Trockenau during the Nazi era . After the Second World War , the place, like all of Lower Silesia , came under Polish administration and was renamed Stary Cien in 1945 . In 1946 it was given its current name Stare Żabno. In 1961 it was finally incorporated into Nowa Sol and ceased to exist as an administrative unit.
