The Stargard-Poznan Railway Company ( SPE or StPo for short ) was founded in 1846. The Prussian state took over a seventh of the capital in it and, through further agreements, retained a strong influence on the company, in whose projects it showed great interest.

Route construction and network relationships

The SPE built a 170-kilometer single-track main line, at that time on the Stettin - Stargard line (later to Gdansk ) of the Berlin-Stettin Railway Company, then the first rail connection from Berlin to Posen (Polish: Poznań ). The first section from Stargard was opened on August 10, 1847 to Woldenberg in the Neumark (today Dobiegniew ). A little delayed by the revolution of 1848 , the second section was gradually put into operation and Poznan was reached on August 10, 1848 - i.e. after a year.

In the Kreuz station (now Krzyż Wielkopolski ), which was intended as a route cross from the start , the Prussian Eastern Railway began building its route via Schneidemühl (now Piła ) to the provinces of West and East Prussia , from Kreuz to Bromberg (now Bydgoszcz ) since July 27, 1851 in operation. With the completion of the network, Stargard – Poznan was only part of the direct connection between the provincial capitals Szczecin and Poznan.

In the interwar period from 1918/19 to 1939, the line crossed the German-Polish border; the border stations were Kreuz and Drawski Młyn.

Today the Polish railway line No. 351 from Poznań to Szczecin is the most important railway connection to the ports at the mouth of the Oder. Between 1975 and 1978 it was electrified.

Ownership

Because the earnings of the SPE did not meet expectations in the beginning, the state intervened and made the SPE subordinate to the Royal Directorate of the Eastern Railways in Bromberg as early as 1851, then in 1857 to the Upper Silesian Railway, which was also temporarily administered by the state . The final date of nationalization is January 1, 1883 and July 1, 1886, although the joint-stock company still existed.
