The start stadium ( Russian Стадион "Старт" ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Russian city of Saransk . It has space for 11,581 spectators and was the home of the Mordowija Saransk association .

history

A parade in the start stadium in 2010

The start stadium in Saransk, a city with almost 300,000 inhabitants in the western Russian Republic of Mordovia , was built in 2004 and opened in the same year. Since opening, the stadium has accommodated 11,581 visitors, making it the largest in Mordovia.

Since 2004, the local club Mordowija Saransk used the stadium as a venue for home football matches. The club, which was founded in 1961, played for a long time in the lower leagues of Soviet and Russian football, but achieved promotion to the Premjer League , the top division in Russian football, in the 2011/12 season by taking first place in the second-rate first division . Since 2012, spectators at the start stadium have also seen top division football.

In addition to soccer games, the Start Stadium also offers space for other attractions. A large number of parades and concerts have already taken place here.

future plans

In the course of the Football World Cup in Russia in 2018 , Saransk was also awarded the contract to be one of the venues for the world championships. Since the start stadium is not big enough for this and an expansion was not planned from the start, a new stadium was built. This offers space for around 44,000 spectators and was completed in 2018. After the World Cup, the venue should be reduced to 28,000 seats and the new home of Mordowija Saransk.
