Statewatch members are independent lawyers, lecturers, journalists, social scientists and activists in approximately 12 different countries. According to Statewatch, one of the main concerns of Statewatch is to provide the public with targeted information about the development of civil liberties in Europe and thus to provide the basis for a well-founded discussion.

The organization is recognized as a renowned civil rights agency and valued as an indispensable provider of reliable data in the field of civil rights. It runs a documentation center on European government activities; its database contains several thousand official documents.

In 2005, Statewatch initiated the establishment of the European Civil Liberties Network .
