The quarry used today as a climbing rock

Statham's Quarry , also called Darling Range Quarry and Perth City Council's Darling Range Quarry after 1920 , is a quarry in Western Australia , in which the hard rock diabase was extracted. It is located within the small Gooseberry Hill National Park on the southern side of the outlet of the Helena River valley into the Swan Coastal Plain in Gooseberry Hill , a suburb of Perth . The quarry, which can be seen from Ridge Hill Road, is the largest diabase deposit in the area.

history

The quarry was operated by Thomas Statham and William Burton from 1894 until Statham's death in 1920. The Perth City Council then took over the operation of the quarry.

The Statham Quarry is a rare example of a historic quarry in Western Australia . The traces of the Australian stone extraction in the first quarter of the 20th century have been preserved. The diabase rock was used for paving stones and curbs in the streets of Perth. The stones on City Beach also come from here. The Kalamunda Zig Zag , a branch of the Upper Darling Range Railway , which ceased operations in 1949 , used to lead to the quarry .

Another diabase quarry is Government Quarry at Boya, which is now called Hudman Road Quarry and is on the border with Darlington . A clay deposit in Glen Forrest is also called Statham . The clay from this deposit was used to make masonry stones. The quarry area is often ravaged by bushfires .

Todays use

Today the quarry is used for climbing and abseiling exercises and is maintained by the Department of Environment and Conservation . The quarry in the immediate vicinity of Perth is known as a safe and easily accessible climbing garden.
