The static is a branch of mechanics that deals with still or resting bodies concerned. With these all forces are in equilibrium ; the statics is therefore also referred to as the "theory of equilibrium". Dynamics or kinetics is concerned with accelerated bodies . The methods and findings of statics can also be applied to bodies that move at constant speed, as they do not experience any acceleration.

The statics are further subdivided according to the bodies:
