The young natural scientist and technician station ( station for short ), of which there were 192 locations in 1983, was a care facility in the GDR that offered school-age children and adolescents (also parallel to the after- school after- school care for young students) the opportunity to study the natural sciences to train.

There were such stations in practically every major town, they were mostly housed in their own buildings. The teaching opportunities included, among other things, special courses or individual support in mathematics, physics, electrical engineering, computer science and similar subjects by specially employed teachers. The station did not see itself as an opportunity for tutoring, but as a further funding opportunity for gifted or interested students. For this purpose, subjects were offered that either found no place in the normal curriculum or were only taught in higher grades. The events carried out included district Olympics in chemistry and biology as well as excursions. Members of the district support groups also met regularly to carry out experiments in well-equipped laboratories under the guidance of their supervisors. The specialist camps were one of the multi-day events in this context.

Courses were offered both during school hours (afternoons) and during school holidays (all day). Participation in the various courses or individual funding at the station was always free of charge.

Until about 1990 there was a large number of stations for young naturalists and technicians, for example:

  • Young technician and natural scientist station in Wittenberg; Photo, chemistry, handicrafts, electrical engineering
  • Station of young naturalists and technicians in Karl-Marx-Stadt ; Electrical engineering / electronics, IT, model aircraft construction
  • Station of young naturalists and technicians in Gnoien ; Biology, chemistry, model aircraft
  • Station of young naturalists and technicians in "Yuri Gagarin" in Halle ; Nature and environmental protection, equestrian sport and husbandry, model making, plant growing
  • Young technician station in Berlin-Treptow ; Mechanics, model making, electrics, photography and chemistry
  • Station of young naturalists and technicians in Malchin ; astronomy
  • Station of young naturalists and technicians in Lübbenau ; Woodworking, aircraft, car and ship model making, electronics, microelectronics, photography, computer technology, beekeepers, aquaristics, ornithology, cave explorers and automotive technology
  • Station of young naturalists and technicians in Schwerin-Warnitz ; Electrical engineering / electronics, model aircraft and cars, mathematics, biology / nature conservation / fishing

In some stations of young technicians (e.g. in Karl-Marx-Stadt) there were polyplay video game machines.

After the fall of the Wall , practically all stations were closed for cost reasons. A few stations could hold up to this day (see web links).

Other stations changed their names and now do youth work in the sponsorship of non-profit associations .
