Statute (international law)

In the field of international law, a statute is usually a treaty under international law that constitutes (statutes) an international organization, court or other foreign policy instrument and at the same time establishes its rules of procedure or the right to its own rules of procedure.

Examples of statutes in this sense are:

• the statute of the ICJ
• the Rome Statute of the ICC

These treaties do not always have the word statute in their name, although they provide for facilities such as:

• the United Nations Charter in relation to the UN
• the Convention on the Law of the Sea in relation to the ICC
