Staurakios
Staurakios ( Middle Greek Σταυράκιος , Latin Stauracius ; † beginning of January 812) was the Byzantine emperor for a few weeks in 811 .
Life
Staurakios was the son of Emperor Nikephoros' I . He was made co-emperor by this in 803. In 807 he married Theophano, a relative of the former Empress Irene . In the battle of the Warbiza Pass against the Bulgarians in 811, his father was killed in action. Staurakios, who had also taken part in the battle, escaped badly wounded and was crowned emperor on July 28 in Adrianople . When he returned to Constantinople, he appointed his wife co-regent. Due to his serious injuries, however, he was deposed by the Patriarch Nikephoros in early October 811 and banished to a monastery , where he died in early January of the following year. Some sources report that he was poisoned by his sister Prokopia. He was succeeded by Michael I. Rangabe, who had survived the battle unharmed and was married to Prokopia.
