( Günther , 1858)

Staurois natator (Greek stauros = cross, pole, Latin natator = swimmer) is a species of the genus Staurois from the family of real frogs . In English it is called Mindanao Splash Frog (German about Mindanao Splash Frog ) or Black-spotted Rock Frog (German black-spotted rock frog ). Shortly before its last name, Günther named this species as Ixalus guttatus . It is believed that this species is actually a number of as yet unexplored cryptic species .

distribution

This species is considered not endangered because it is distributed over a very large area. In addition, a large number of individuals is suspected and it is considered unlikely that their numbers will decrease quickly enough for inclusion on the Red List.

In addition to Borneo, it also occurs on the islands of Palawan, Mindanao, Leyte, Bohol, Basilan, Busuanga, Culion and Samar Islands, which all belong to the Philippines. All finds so far have been made between 150 and 1000 meters above sea level. In places where they occur, they usually appear in large numbers.

Habitat

The species can generally be found in rainforests and inland wetlands. S. natator has so far been found along small, rocky, fast-flowing brooks in the hilly primary rainforest. Adults usually sit on branches that overhang the water or on stones that line the bank.

The larval development also takes place under water.

behavior

The eggs are laid and the breeder takes place under water. The tadpoles can be found en masse under dead leaves floating underwater.
