Stauroneis is a genus of diatoms (Bacillariophyta) with around 30 species that occur in fresh and marine water.

features

The representatives are unicellular, boat-shaped diatoms. The cells have a two-counter shell, which is typical for diatoms. The shell is rectangular when viewed from the side and boat-shaped when viewed from the shell. The ends are often widened like a button. Each cell contains two elongated plastids with pyrenoids. They are colored golden brown by fucoxanthin and lie against the belt straps. The shell is finely structured in the area to the side of the two raphs , between the two raphs there is an unstructured area that takes up the entire cell width. The cells are 9 to 360 micrometers long.

Asexual reproduction occurs through the typical dichotomy of diatoms. Sexual reproduction occurs through isogamy , with one gamete being formed per cell . The cells then enlarge during the auxospore formation.

Occurrence

Stauroneis lives on various substrates in flowing and standing water, including brackish water.
