The reservoir is located in the North Bohemian Basin, two kilometers northeast of the city center of Chomutov on the Chomutov corridors at 339 m above sea level. M. The dammed water is the Hutní potok, which has its origin in the reservoir. The Ústí nad Labem – Chomutov railway runs north of the lake .

The Otvice Reservoir is the upper and largest of a cascade of three ponds along the Hutní potok to the Otvice municipality . To the east, the Prostřední otvický rybník ( Middle Pond ) and the Malý otvický rybník ( Haberlteich ) join. The immediate west preferred Kamencové jezero ( Alum ) is a residue of an old hole Alaungrube . In the northwest and north are the Kamenný rybník ( stone pond ) and Červený rybník ( red pond ) other small ponds.

history

The former fishing pond Velký otvický rybník was expanded into a reservoir between 1963 and 1967 by the company Wasserbau 06 Jirkov. Its water management use began in 1971 and it became one of the replacement reservoirs for the Dřínov reservoir .

The reservoir has a four meter high dam. This consists of the main dam to the northeast to the Prostřední otvický rybník and a side dam to the southeast. The dam crest has a total length of 1.35 km and is three meters wide at the main dam. The reservoir with a water surface of 16.95 hectares is used for the service water supply and holds 445,000 m³ of water.

Together with the Alaunsee, which serves as a bathing lake, it forms a coherent recreational area. The Otvice reservoir is approved for motor boats and has a 780 m towing stretch for water skiing, which is the longest in the Czech Republic.
