Ste-Marie-Madeleine

The Roman Catholic Church of Ste-Marie-Madeleine is located in Taizé in the Saône-et-Loire department in France . The church has been classified as a monument historique since 1913 .

history

The Ste-Marie-Madeleine church was first mentioned in 1156 as the property of Cluny Abbey. It was built in the 12th century as a Romanesque choir tower church. The church has a single nave and has two high-lying, small arched windows from the time it was built in the nave. The slender choir tower rises above the choir. Immediately after this, the building closes in the east with a semicircular apse.

From 1949 the church was first used by the ecumenical Communauté de Taizé before they could build their own church building in the village. It is still used today for personal prayers by the brothers and for smaller church services for visitors to the community, and it is also used by many guests as a retreat, for meditation or personal prayer.

In front of the church is the village cemetery, where, among other things, the founder of the community, Frère Roger and other brothers lie. The grave is a popular pilgrimage site.

In 2017 the interior of the church was renovated. The entrance area was renewed with a lock made of glass doors, the interior walls were painted a warm white tone and the benches were replaced with simple wooden ones.
