Steam World Dig is one of Image & Form developed Jump 'n' Run - Computer game with strong Metroidvania -Einflüssen. The game was first released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2013. The game was later ported to Microsoft Windows , macOS , Linux , PlayStation Vita , PlayStation 4 , Wii U and Nintendo Switch .

In the game you slip into the role of the lonely steambot digger Rusty, who arrives in an old, destroyed mining town called Tumbleton. You dig your way through the earth where you can find riches, monsters and secret tunnels. The story begins with Rusty finding his uncle dead in the mine. Then he takes his pickaxe, begins to dig and thus explores the secrets of the underground. As soon as Rusty hits the ground, he meets Voltbot, the final and only boss. In order to defeat this, his uncle hid various improvements in the mine. Rusty eventually fights Voltbot and wins.

The game was released for Nintendo 3DS on August 7, 2013. On December 5, 2013, the game was finally released for Windows , MacOS and Linux . The game was released for the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita on March 18, 2014 and for the Wii U on August 28, 2014. The game was released for Xbox One on June 5, 2015. The game was last released for Nintendo Switch on February 1, 2018.

The game brought in so much cash that Image & Form launched another game called SteamWorld Heist . The direct successor SteamWorld Dig 2 was released on September 21, 2017 .

SteamWorld Dig was largely positively received by the trade press . The Nintendo 3DS version has a Metascore of 82 out of 100 possible points on the Metacritic rating website , based on 82 ratings. The PC version holds a Metascore of 76 points, based on 12 ratings. The German-language computer game magazine GameStar rated the game with 72 out of 100 points.
