Stefan Berger (chemist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stefan Berger (born September 9, 1946 in Heidelberg ) is a German chemist ( NMR spectroscopy , organic chemistry , analytical chemistry ). He was a professor at the University of Leipzig .

From 1966 he studied chemistry at the University of Tübingen , where he was introduced to NMR spectroscopy in a course by Harald Suhr (* 1928) in 1968 and received his diploma in 1970, and received his doctorate in 1973 with Anton Rieker at the University of Tübingen ( synthesis and Fourier transform 13C-NMR spectroscopy of oxepines ). As a post-doctoral student he was at Caltech with John D. Roberts in 1973/74 . There he also met Dieter Seebach and the NMR specialist David M. Grant(1921–2013, University of Utah), who were visiting professors there at the time. In 1981 he completed his habilitation in organic chemistry in Marburg with a topic from NMR spectroscopy. In 1988 he became associate professor in Marburg and in 1997 professor of analytical chemistry in Leipzig. He retired in 2013.

He researched developments in the methods of NMR spectroscopy with their applications in bioorganic chemistry.

In 2009 he and Dieter Sicker received the literary prize of the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie for their book Classics in Spectroscopy . It describes in detail spectroscopic methods for the identification and structure elucidation of 30 natural products.
