Stefan Garthe

Stefan Garthe (* 1966 ) is a German biologist , scientist at the Research and Technology Center (FTZ) West Coast and university professor. From 2012 to 2017 he was President of the German Ornithological Society .

Garthe has long been concerned with sea birds. In 1993 he finished his diploma studies in biology at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel with a thesis on the effects of bycatch on seabirds in the North Sea ("Quantification of waste and bycatch from fishing in the southeastern North Sea and their use by seabirds") . He completed his doctorate in Kiel (“Distribution and abundance of North Sea seabirds and their feeding ecology in relation to fisheries and hydrography”), which he completed in 1997. A postdoc station was the Department of Psychology at Memorial University of Newfoundland , St. John's, Canada. From 2001 to 2007 he was a research assistant at the FTZ and completed his habilitation in Kiel in 2005. Since 2007 he has headed the working group “Sea Bird Ecology” as Academic Councilor at the FTZ.
