Stefan Grimm ( 1963 - September 25, 2014 in Northwood, Middlesex ) was a biologist and professor of toxicology at Imperial College London . He worked in the field of signal cascades in tumor development .

Life

After completing his doctorate in 1994 at the University of Tübingen , he worked as a postdoc with Philip Leder at Harvard University from 1995 to 1998 and then as a junior research group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry . In 2004 Stefan Grimm went to the Imperial College London as a professor. One month after his sudden death, an email he sent with a delay was received by his colleagues in the institute, which made an atmosphere of bullying by superiors partly responsible for his suicide . For example, the unmarried scientist hired as a professor is said to have been given an ultimatum with clear guidelines on the type and scope of third-party funding to be acquired under threat of dismissal .

The focus of Grimm's work was on the areas of signal cascades and tumor development. He made fundamental contributions to the understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms of cell death in connection with the development of cancer. In 20 years he published 50 articles in highly regarded journals and applied for patents for five inventions.
