Stefan Schmitz (* 1954 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German architect and urban planner .

life and work

After working as a freelancer in various architectural offices - u. a. with Gottfried Böhm in Paris and Adolfo Natalini from Superstudio in Florence - in 1990 he founded Stefan Schmitz BDA Architects and Urban Planners in Cologne. Already at the beginning of his active professional career he was awarded the Rheinisches Kulturpreis (sponsorship award with Prof. Böhm as the main prize winner) and the sponsorship award of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for young artists .

In addition to numerous competition successes and other projects in the field of architecture, urban design and urban development, the development of the Mongolian planned city Maidar City is currently under strict ecological standards, his largest ongoing project, the development of which he will accompany for many years. The planning was awarded “Platinum” in 2016, the highest certificate from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).

Schmitz is a founding member of the Rheinschiene planning group and managing partner of the resulting RSAA GmbH office , with whom he has designed and supervised many major projects in China and Mongolia since then. He also co-founded the Architekturforum Rheinland eV (AFR). After his voluntary work in Cologne as chairman of the design advisory board and chairman of the Association of German Architects (BDA), he was appointed economic ambassador for the city of Cologne in 2008; Appointed spokesman for the EcoCity + initiative for sustainable urban development in China in 2009 and visiting professor in Xuzhou (China) in 2010. In 2018 he was appointed Honorary Consul of Mongolia (NRW) and on the Advisory Board of the German-Mongolian Society. Schmitz regularly gives lectures on the topic of ecological urban development at national and international conferences.
