The stone box from Kastlösa ( Swedish: Hällkista i Kastlösa ) discovered in 2011 on the island of Öland , in the province of Kalmar län in Sweden , lay in the gravel bed under the arable soil without any visible markings. Kastlösa is part of the municipality of Mörbylånga ( Tatort ) in the southern part of the island. The small, north-south oriented stone box ( Swedish: Hällkista ) measures 1.5 x 0.6 m, its top plate has broken into numerous pieces. Neolithic monuments are an expression of the culture and ideology of Neolithic societies. Their origin and function are considered to be the hallmarks of social development.

In terms of type and size, it can be assumed that it is another children's grave from the Iron Age , as a remarkable number of stone boxes held children's burials in the immediate vicinity. North of Kastlösa, four stone boxes were examined in the first half of the 20th century, three of which contained children's burials. About one kilometer to the south is the Bjärby cemetery (not identical to the rune stone site on Öland). About 80 stone boxes with children's burials were found here in the 1970s, but only about 20 of adults from the Roman Iron Age . This is an unusual accumulation of children's graves, which begs the question of whether it is an epidemic or a particular local or regional tradition. An answer to this question should be found through the use of new, more sophisticated analytical methods.
