The stone box of Mount Stewart is in Mount Stewart ( Irish Teampall Chróine / Moin Stíobhaird ) between Greyabbey and Newtownards near Strangford Lough in Ards in County Down in Northern Ireland .

The Mount Stewart stone box was first described in 1786. It lay in an approximately 2.0 m high cairn with a diameter of 12 to 18 m, which from time to time served as a "quarry". It contained a large central box and at least 15 smaller boxes. The large box from which three stones were preserved was empty, but the smaller ones contained a multitude of vessels (six survived) and corpse burns in a scatter of gravel . There is some variation in the descriptions of the boxes, but the large one measured 1.73 m × 0.8 m, accompanied by a smaller one that was 1.07 m × 0.46 m.

Despite the importance of the place, the small stone boxes were removed. In 1935, the large stone box and all remains were removed to make way for a private runway.
