Dahrendorf stone circle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The stone circle of Dahrendorf was a stone circle near Dahrendorf , a district of Dehre in Altmarkkreis Salzwedel in Saxony-Anhalt .

Location and description

The stone circle was on the Lehnekenberg near Dahrendorf, which has been largely removed by gravel mining. The stone circle consisted of a large, central stone made of granite , which was surrounded by several small stones. The large stone was called "Lehnekenstein". A menhir at Bonese that still exists today bears the same name . In 1854 the stone circle of Dahrendorf was destroyed. The central stone was split and built into the foundation of a house.

The area around the stone circle served as a settlement and burial site at least from the Bronze Age and until the late Roman Empire . A pre-Roman Iron Age cremation cemetery was partially excavated in the mid-19th century.

In 1995 a menhir was set up in neighboring Kortenbeck , which originally came from near the Lehnekenberg. It may be a remnant of the stone circle.
