The stone cross near Kriegenbrunn is a historic stone cross in the Erlangen district of Kriegenbrunn . The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation lists it under monument number D-5-62-000-900.
Location
The stone cross stands northeast of the Kriegenbrunn lock of the Main-Danube Canal on the western edge of the Kriegenbrunn switchgear . The location of the cross is within the company premises and is not freely accessible, but can be viewed from the outside.
description
The sandstone cross, which has sunk into the ground almost to the crossbeam, is about 110 cm high, 120 cm wide and 35 cm deep. Cement was clearly visible above the shaft, which indicates possible repairs to damage. On the currently non-visible rear panel, according to a description from the 1940s, two Wetzrillen , a small incised cross and an in-depth small triangle with an arrow , which is according to former assumptions tines could act.
history
The current location of the stone cross does not correspond to the original location of the installation. Originally it was a few meters further east. With the construction of the Main-Danube Canal, the Federal Motorway 3 and the switchgear, the immediate vicinity of the Steinkreuz was permanently changed. Until then, the cross stood in a secluded place in the Steinkreuz forest section named after it in the so-called crow's wood. This forest now begins further south.
The meaning of the stone cross, which is probably from the late Middle Ages, is unknown. According to a legend , a farmer was caught by a thunderstorm during the hay harvest. A lightning struck in the load of hay, the farmer burned with his horses. In addition, at this place, described as eerie , one can hear the gentlemen from Frauenaurach and Kriegenbrunn fighting with each other at night .
