The stone mill in January 2013

The stone mill in Halle (Saale) is a water mill on the Mühlgraben, a natural right arm of the Saale . The stone mill is a former oil and grain mill and not, as the name suggests, a stone mill . It probably owned the first stone mill building in the city.

The mill was first mentioned in 1121 in a document for the Neuwerk monastery to which it belonged. The current mill building was built from quarry stone, dates from the 17th century and was rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries after being destroyed in the Thirty Years War . Until the end of the 19th century, the stone mill had three water wheels. Today there is an undershot Panster wheel from 1905. In the 17th century, the mill had six grinders , and today it still has one shot. The mill was operated with electric motors until 1975.

Today the building, the technical equipment and the waterway are ruined or in great need of renovation. The nearby stone mill bridge was named after the mill .

In January 2017 the listed mill was entered on the “Red List” of threatened architectural monuments of the city of Halle.
