The Cholwichtown stone row (also called Cholwich Town Waste ) was a 217 meter row of stones east of Lee Moor near Plymouth in Devon , England , which was removed in 1961 to make way for the overburden of a kaolin pit. It consisted of 53 stones, all less than three feet high. Only the row of stones from Piles Hill and Stalldon were built with larger stones. The row of stones was a listed building (Ancient Monument Devon 426), but the protection was lifted in 1991 when the monument was long destroyed.

As usual with Dartmoor stone rows, the row had a stone circle at the top . It consisted of eight stones and was about 5 meters in diameter. The stones, the distance between which was variable, were usually about a meter long. The largest stone was about two feet high and was unusually in the middle of the row.

Already in 1848 the row was badly damaged with less than half of its original stones, and an approximately 3.7 m high menhir was missing. The row of stones was removed after the excavation in 1961, its location covered with the overburden from the kaolin pit.

Dating

During the 1961 excavation by IG Simmons (Durham) and George Eogan, no evidence of a dating of the series was found. The bases of many missing stones were found, including a 2.4 m diameter pit in the center of the circle. A pollen diagram shows that the row of stones was erected in a forest meadow, surrounded by an oak forest. There was also evidence of grain cultivation.
