Steinwarder , together with the former island Graswarder to the east, forms an elongated peninsula on the coast of Heiligenhafen in the Ostholstein district in Schleswig-Holstein .

location

The Steinwarder is located in the northwest of the urban area of Heiligenhafen and was originally only connected to the mainland in the area of the Eichholz lowlands not far from the Heiligenhafen lighthouse at the beginning of the Heiligenhafen cliffs. In 1954, not far from the port, a connection was established with the mainland and what was then Graswarder Island. The water surface between the Steinwarder and the mainland has since formed the Heiligenhafener Binnensee , which despite its name still has a connection with the Baltic Sea .

Development and tourist development

The tourist development of the Steinwarder reached its first high point at the end of the 1960s with the establishment of the Heilgenhafen holiday center near the Eichholz lowland. An access road was then created following the beach, along which hotels and holiday apartments have been and are being built since the 1970s. The Steinwarder beach is the main bathing beach in the city of Heiligenhafen. In 2012 the Heiligenhafen pier was inaugurated in the east of the peninsula , and further tourist buildings are currently (2015) under construction in the vicinity.
