Stelidota geminata (also strawberry gloss beetle ) is a beetle from the family of the gloss beetles (Nitidulidae). In English, the beetle species is called Strawberry Sap Beetle ("strawberry juice beetle").
features
The beetles become 2–3 mm long. Their basic color is dark red to dark brown. The pronotum is widest at the base. The pronotum edges are curved. The wing covers each have nine ribs. At the base and in the rear third of the two elytra there are 2 bright spots each. The legs are colored light red-orange.
distribution
Stelidota geminata is native to the Nearctic and Neotropical . The species occurs in South America in Colombia and in Brazil. In North America it is represented along the east coast from Québec to Florida , in the midwest from Ontario to Texas . The species was introduced into the Old World , where it is considered an invasive species. In recent years, the species has spread north from the Mediterranean. In Germany it has been found in the southwest, mainly in the Upper Rhine Rift.
Way of life
The beetles are often found on overripe fruits and rotting vegetables. The beetles are considered pests on strawberry plantations. The females lay their eggs on damaged fruits, especially strawberries. The beetles can be seen from May to October, mainly in August.
