The Stellahaus is an office building in Hamburg's old town . The building is a registered cultural monument.

Location and description

The building is located at number 52 on Rödingsmarkt in Hamburg . It is a ten-story office building, one of the first high-rise buildings in Hamburg. The plastered facade is structured by colossal pilasters as well as cornices and friezes. On the harbor side, she has four half-figures designed by Richard Kuöhl that represent Hanse cogs . Above the front door there is a relief of Poseidon as a boy. The expressionist decor is probably derived from the name of the house, as “Stella” is the Latin word for star.

history

The originally five-storey building was built in 1874/75 according to plans by the architect Martin Haller . In 1922/23 the building was increased by five additional storeys. Since the old building could not bear the loads, the new storeys built on an iron structure were given their own foundation. It was about staggered floors , which was a novelty at the time. The entire structure was given a tower-like character. Another innovation was the plastered facade, the expressionist forms of which expressed the style of the time. The architects Albert Lindhorst , Edwin Reith and Zaulek & Hartmann created the plans for the renovation and expansion of the building .

The building is now used as an office building.
