Stellerburg

The Stellerburg is a former early medieval ring wall in Weddingstedt in the Dithmarschen district in Schleswig-Holstein .

location

The facility is the northernmost Saxon defense system and was to serve in a strategically favorable position for defense against the Vikings , as the conquerors from the north had to pass it. To the east of the path there were extensive moorland areas, and to the west there were unspoiled, marshy and often flooded marshland .

description

The ring wall consisted of wood, earth and wall. Extensive excavation work by the Kiel Museum for Prehistoric Antiquities in 1932/1933 uncovered a boardwalk in the castle as well as the floor plans of 20 wooden houses. The facility was probably only used temporarily, at least this is indicated by the small number of small finds.

The Saxon complex dates from the time before the conquest by Charlemagne .
