The Bökelburg is an early medieval ring wall in Burg in Schleswig-Holstein . The wall, with a diameter of 100 meters and a height of four to five meters, is the largest surviving specimen in the northern Elbingian region of Saxony . Since 1818 there has been a cemetery in the interior of the ring wall and trees have been planted on the wall.

description

The cemetery in the wall interior

The rampart was built on the edge of the Geest on a spur of the terrain, which was enclosed in the north and south by a swampy lowland and marshland . It allows a wide view over the Wilstermarsch . The name Bökelburg comes from Low German and means Buchenburg. The castle complex gave its name to the place Burg, in which it is located.

An archaeological excavation took place in 1947 and 1948. It was limited to the cemetery paths, as the interior has served as a cemetery since the beginning of the 19th century. Based on the distribution of the finds, a concentric development could be seen in the middle of the ramparts. Due to ceramic finds, the time of use of the Bökelburg is dated between the 9th and 11th centuries. One find was a disc brooch with red enamel inlay and a cross from the 9th century.

The Stellerburg near Weddingstedt is a similar ring wall .

history

The castle complex served the people in Dithmarschen to protect them against Franks , Abodrites and Vikings until the 11th century . According to historical tradition, the complex withstood a Slavic siege in 1028 . More recent historical findings suggest that the Udonen or later Stade Counts were wealthy in Dithmarschen in the 11th century, including the Bökelburg. Around 1100 it became the seat of Count Lothar-Udo III. Roger that.
