The Stenersen Museum ( Norwegian : Stenersenmuseet ) in Oslo , Norway , is an art museum that opened in 1994 and was named after the Norwegian art patron Rolf Stenersen .

The museum is located at Munkedamsveien 15 in the center of the Norwegian capital. The National Theater and the Concert Hall are located near the museum .

The exhibition rooms have an area of ​​1800 m², spread over three floors.

Collections

The Stenersenmuseet is home to three private collections.

Rolf Stenersen's collection

The art patron Rolf Stenersen bequeathed his private collection to the municipality of Aker in 1936. When the museum opened in 1994, the collection was moved to the Sternersenmuseet. Stenersen's collection contains mainly works by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch , with whom he was friends. Approx. 400 works by Munch are included in the collection. The collection also includes works by Norwegian artists Ludvig Karsten, Reidar Aulie , Henrik Lund and Rolf Nesch .

Amaldus Nielsen Collection

300 paintings and 100 drawings by the Norwegian painter Amaldus Nielsen have found their home in the Stenersenmuseet. The works of the artist, who died in 1932, were donated by his family to the city of Oslo the year after his death. The museum has the largest collection of his works, which were created between 1856 and 1932.

Ludvig Ravensberg Collection

The museum has almost 160 works by the Norwegian artist Ludvig Ravensberg (1871–1958). The artist's widow bequeathed the works to the city of Oslo in 1972.

Exhibitions

The museum regularly organizes exhibitions of national and international artists. Works by the following artists have been exhibited in recent years: Georges Adéagbo (Ivory Coast), William Kentridge (South Africa), Gregory Crewdson (USA), Roger Ballen (USA), Lee Miller (USA), Marina Abramović (Yugoslavia), Yoko Ono (USA) ), Wangechi Mutu (Kenya).
