Stenichneumon culpator is a parasitic wasp from the subfamily of Ichneumoninae .

Subspecies

There are the following subspecies:

  • Stenichneumon culpator adsentator ( Tischbein , 1881)
  • Stenichneumon culpator cincticornis ( Cresson , 1864)
  • Stenichneumon culpator culpator ( closet , 1802)
  • Stenichneumon culpator iwatensis Uchida , 1926

features

The relatively large parasitic wasps reach a body length of 15-18 mm. The parasitic wasps have a black basic color. Several subspecies are distinguished. The following is a description of the nominate form S. c. culpator : first and second tergite are colored red. The antennae of the females have a white band that is missing in the male. The femurs are black, the tibiae are red, the posterior tarsi are dark in color. The forewings have an orange wing mark .

distribution

Stenichneumon culpator is common in the Palearctic and Nearctic . The nominate form occurs in Central and Southern Europe. S. c. adsentator is found in the British Isles. S. c. iwatensis is represented in the Far East. S. c. cincticornis is common in North America.

Way of life

The insects are often found on the edges of forests, clearings and hedges. The adult parasitic wasps fly in spring and summer. They are often seen on meadow hogweed ( Heracleum sphondylium ). The fertilized females overwinter and lay their eggs on caterpillars and newly pupated butterflies in spring. The hatched larvae parasitize them. The ash gray humpback owl ( Trichoplusia ni ) is one of its host species .
