Systematics
Order : insects
Order : Hymenoptera (Hymenoptera)
Subordination : Waist Wasps (Apocrita)
Partial order : Legimmen (Terebrantia)
Family : Wasps (Ichneumonidae)
Subfamily : Ichneumoninae
Scientific name
Ichneumoninae
Latreille , 1802

Ichneumoninae after the Cryptinae the second largest subfamily of parasitic wasps with about 4300 species in 438 genera and 16 tribes. In Germany alone, more than 600 species of Ichnemoninae are known.

Due to the large number of closely related species, the identification of the individual species is usually only possible for specialists.

morphology

This species-rich subfamily mostly contains animals drawn in color with the abdomen flattened. The Propodeum is relatively long. In the middle of the fore wing is a characteristic, relatively large pentagonal cell. The antennae of the males have elongated, somewhat raised sensilla fields on several segments on the outside, the so-called tyloids, which are formed differently depending on the species and are used to search for a partner. The males and females are often significantly different. Depending on the size of the host, the size of the Ichneumonidae varies from 2.5 to 30 mm in length.

Way of life

Cratichneumon unificatus, figure from Tereshkin

All Ichneumoninae are butterfly parasitoids , ie the females lay their eggs in caterpillars or pupae of butterflies in which they develop. Very little is known about the way of life of many species. The animals in the collections are mostly caught by malaise traps. In the literature there are a number of incorrect reports about the hosts, for a reliable determination it makes sense to pull the parasitic wasps from the host pupae.

Systematics and list of genera

The subfamily is divided into the following tribes according to Tereshkin (see also DS Yu). Distribution information according to Tereshkin. There are still many undescribed species. The genera mentioned below are only examples (especially genera that also occur in Central Europe).
