The antennae of the females are black with the exception of a white band that is halfway along. The antennae of the males are completely black. There is a white or light yellow spot on the label . In females, tergites 2 and 3 of the nominate form are colored red with a dark rear edge. In the male, the rear tergites are also partly reddish in color. The femora and tibia are usually colored red. The apical end of the posterior femora is black. The anterior and middle tarsi are usually red while the posterior ones are colored black. There may be deviations in the coloring of the legs. The forewings have an orange wing mark . The female's short laying stinger is hidden.

distribution

The parasitic wasp species is widespread in Europe. It is also represented in England. To the east, their occurrence extends across Asia Minor and the Caucasus to Central Asia (Kazakhstan).

Way of life

The parasitic wasps' flight time usually lasts from late April to October. The species shows two short one-month phases of increased activity. The parasitic wasps parasitize caterpillars of various owl butterflies (Noctuidae). The females overwinter as adults under moss, under stones or in rotten dead wood.
