The MaK 400 C series is a three-axle diesel locomotive with a rod drive , which is designed for heavy shunting and medium-duty line service. It was built from 1955 to 1963 in 34 copies by the company Maschinenbau Kiel (MaK).

The locomotives have not received an entry in the German vehicle settings register.

development

The locomotive is the further development of the DR series V 36 , of which a few examples were produced until 1950. Compared to the pre-war design, the new machines were manufactured with a front and a rear porch, between which the elevated driver's cab is located. They were created at the same time as the DB series V 60 and were specially tailored to the needs of private railways .

16 of the locomotives were made in standard gauge (1435 mm) and 18 in Cape gauge (1067 mm). The narrow-gauge locomotives were delivered to Nigeria , eight of them to NPA - Nigerian Ports Authority and ten to NRC - Nigerian Railway Corporation. The locomotives belong to the first generation of MaK and Vossloh locomotives . The designation scheme expresses the performance program (roughly the engine output in HP) and the wheel alignment.

technology

The locomotives corresponded to the building principles after 1945. The driver's cab was arranged in an elevated position, with the driver's cab being given large inclined panes. In this series, there is no sun protection on the windows. The locomotive was entered on the front opposite the driver's cab via shunting steps and the circulation.

The running gear of the three-axle locomotive had coupling rods. At that time, a chassis with cardan shafts was only in the development stage. It is noticeable that the minimum curve radius does not reach the value of the four-axis MaK 1000 D.

The locomotive was driven by a six-cylinder, four-stroke MS 301 diesel engine from MaK , which delivered 400 hp. The power transmission took place with a three-speed L37Z transmission from Voith .

The locomotives were painted red. They had two-tone typhones . In the local press in Wittlage , the locomotive was nicknamed the phonetic locomotive .

commitment

The locomotives were delivered initially to private railways such as railway company Altona-Kaltenkirchen-Neumünster , the narrow-gauge railway Voldagsen-Duingen-Delligsen , the narrow-gauge railway Gittelde basic and Wittlager orbit .

Some larger companies also received locomotives of the MaK 400 C series . From 1956 to 1960, 18 locomotives were delivered to Nigeria that were designed in Cape Gauge. Nothing further is known about these.

Some locomotives are still preserved today, scrapping began as early as the 1980s. Several were sold abroad as construction locomotives. The prototype locomotive with the factory number MaK 400001 belongs to the Kleinbahn Leeste today and is 64 years old (2019).
