Herman Jay Cohen

Herman Jay Cohen (born February 10, 1932 in New York City ) is a former American diplomat who was Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs between 1989 and 1993 and who was awarded the title Career Ambassador in 1992 .

Life

After attending school, Herman Jay Cohen began studying political science at the City College of New York (CCNY), which he completed in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Political Science). He then did military service in the US Army between 1953 and 1955 . After joining the US State Department , he found various uses and also completed postgraduate studies in international relations at the American University (AU), which he completed in 1962 with a Master of Arts (MA International Relations). On June 24, 1977 he was appointed Ambassador of the United States to Senegal , where he handed over his credentials on July 22, 1977 as the successor to Orison Rudolph Aggrey . He remained in this post until July 21, 1980 and was then replaced by Walter Carrington . At the same time, he was also accredited as ambassador to Gambia from June 24, 1977 to July 21, 1980 .

After various other activities such as a director for Africa at the National Security Council NSC ( National Security Council ) Cohen was on 12 May 1989 as a successor to Chester Crocker Head of the African Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs ) . He held this position until February 26, 1993 and was then replaced by George Moose . During this time, on March 11, 1992, he was awarded the title of Career Ambassador .

Herman Jay Cohen was also involved in the American Academy of Diplomacy and the Council on Foreign Relations . He supported the candidacy of George W. Bush for the office of US president and became a member of the French Legion of Honor . He was also a professor at Johns Hopkins University , where he taught at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).
