George Moose

George Edward Moose (born June 23, 1944 in New York City ) is a former American diplomat who was Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs between 1993 and 1997 and who was awarded the title Career Ambassador in 2002 .

Life

George Edward Moose began after attending high school in Denver to study American studies at the private Grinnell College , which he completed in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA American Studies). After a subsequent postgraduate study at Syracuse University , he joined the diplomatic service (Foreign Service) in 1967 and then found various posts at foreign missions and in the US State Department . On October 7, 1983, he became the United States Ambassador to Beninwhere he presented his letter of accreditation on November 4, 1983 as the successor to James B. Engle . He remained in this post until July 7, 1986, when Walter Edward Stadtler succeeded him. On April 15, 1987, he succeeded Willard Ames De Pree as Director of the Office of Management Operations in the State Department and held this position until June 6, 1988, which was then part of the Finance and Office of the Chief Financial Officer Administrative Affairs (Bureau of Finance and Management Policy) .

Moose had previously been appointed United States Ambassador to Senegal on April 28, 1988 , where he succeeded Lannon Walker on October 13, 1988 with his credentials. He remained in this post until May 21, 1991 and was then replaced by Katherine Shirley . After various other activities, he was on 1 April 1993, succeeding Herman Jay Cohen Head of the African Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs ) . He held this position until August 22, 1997, when he was replaced by Susan E. Rice . He in turn succeeded Daniel L. Spiegel as Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations in Geneva on November 18, 1997 and remained in this position until May 31, 2001, when James Brendan Foley replaced him.

George Moose then taught as a Senior Fellow in International Relations at Howard University between 2001 and 2002 . During this time he was awarded the title of Career Ambassador on April 1, 2002 . He also taught as a professor at the George Washington University and committed further for the American Academy of Diplomacy , the Global Interdependence Initiative of the Aspen Institute , the Atlantic Council and the Council on Foreign Relations . He supported the candidacies of John Kerry and Barack Obama for the office of US President . He is married to Judith Kaufmann.
