Crytea sanguinator is a parasitic wasp from the subfamily of Ichneumoninae .

features

The ichneumon wasps reach a size of 7–9 mm. Frons , thorax , scutellum and the front part of the abdomen are colored mostly red. The first tergite is red with the exception of the base. Tergites 2 and 3 are completely red in color. The fourth tergite is red at the base, otherwise black. The rear tergites are black. At the end of the abdomen there is a white spot on the upper side. In contrast to the related species Crytea erythraea , the posterior coxae are completely black. The rear tarsi of the males have a white ring.

distribution

Crytea sanguinator is next to Crytea erythraea one of two representatives of the genus Crytea in Europe. It occurs in large parts of Europe. The species is represented in the British Isles . However, it is absent in Scandinavia. Their occurrence extends in the south to North Africa and Madeira , in the east to the Middle East (Iran).

Way of life

The ichneumon wasps can be seen from the beginning of April. You can find them in meadows. There they often stay on the ground in the herb layer. The species parasitizes caterpillars from the families of the owl butterflies and the flat moths .

Taxonomy

The species was first described by Pietro Rossi in 1794 as an Ichneumon sanguinator . In addition to the nominate form, the subspecies C. s. nigrescens Schmiedeknecht , 1929 differentiated.

Synonyms of the kind are:

  • Ichneumon ruficollis Stephens , 1835
  • Barichneumon sanguinator ( Rossi , 1794)
  • Barichneumon ruficollis ( Stephens , 1835)
