Pietro Rossi (born January 23, 1738 in Florence , † December 21, 1804 in Pisa ) was an Italian natural scientist and entomologist .

Life

Rossi's academic career took place at the University of Pisa . There he received his doctorate in philosophy and medicine in 1759 , then taught as professor of logic from 1763 to 1801, before finally receiving the chair of natural history with the specialty of insectology in 1801, for which he is now often referred to as the world's first professor of entomology . His publications in this field, especially the Fauna etrusca (1790) and the Mantissa insectorum (1792), are considered pioneering achievements in entomology, the taxonomy and nomenclature of which are largely scientifically valid today. His important collection was temporarily owned by Johann Christian Ludwig Hellwig in Braunschweig and is now in the Museum of Natural History at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

The Museo entomologico Pietro Rossi , which was later incorporated into the Museo civico di Storia naturale in Milan , was named after Rossi .
