Taxonomy

The ichneumon wasp was first described as Ichneumon bimaculatus by Franz von Paula Kasten in 1776 after he had not found it in Linnaeus' Systema naturae . He gave the parasitic wasp the German name Zweifleckiger Raupentöter . This common name is no longer common, as with caterpillars killer certain ground beetles of the genus Calosoma ( Calosoma ) or Tachinidae are called.
