Sawanworanayok National Museum

The origin of the museum goes back to the private collection of Thongkham Jitratorn (1877-1965), who, under the name Phra Sawanworanayok, as abbot of Wat Sawankharam and chief monk of Sukhothai province, had amassed an extensive and high-quality collection of ancient Buddha images . He bequeathed this collection to the public on the condition that a museum should be built on the site of the Wat after his death . This museum was founded in 1981 and inaugurated on March 15, 1984 under the chairmanship of Her Royal Highness Maha Chakri Sirindhorn .

The collections are presented to the public in a two-storey museum building with one main wing and two side wings . The building was designed and built with an exterior appearance similar to traditional Thai style .

The task of the museum is to collect and preserve archaeological finds and other art objects from the ancient royal cities of Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai and to restore them, as well as to preserve and present these objects and the collections they have taken over. In addition to the museum's own collections, temporary exhibitions are also shown. In addition to its exhibition function, the museum offers guided tours, lectures, hands-on demonstrations, and similar activities.
