Hoplismenus terrificus is a parasitic wasp from the subfamily of Ichneumoninae .
features
The head, thorax and abdomen of the relatively large parasitic wasps are black. They reach a body length of 20–23 mm. The antennae are completely black in the males, while the antennae in the females have a light band halfway along. The legs are yellow-red except for the black coxae and the posterior tibia , which are black except for the basal end. The females have a very short laying stinger .
distribution
Hoplismenus terrificus occurs in the Palearctic . The species is widespread in Europe. It is only missing in the British Isles and in the north of Scandinavia . To the east, their occurrence extends to Japan .
Way of life
Hoplismenus terrificus is a coinobiont endoparasitoid . The female parasitic wasp stings with their ovipositor an egg in the caterpillar . The parasitic wasp larva develops in the host. This lives on until it pupates . The parasitic wasp larva pupates in the host and leaves the host pupa as an adult parasitic wasp. In doing so, she cuts the front part of the doll. The female adults of Hoplismenus terrificus overwinter.
The host species of Hoplismenus terrificus include various noble butterflies (Nymphalidae) such as:
- Peacock butterfly ( Aglais io )
- Little fox ( Aglais urticae )
- Fiery mother-of-pearl butterfly ( Argynnis adippe )
- Middle mother-of-pearl butterfly ( Fabriciana niobe )
- Lethe sicelis
- Mourning cloak ( Aglais antiopa )
- Big fox ( Aglais polychloros )
- Aglais vaualbum
- C-butterfly ( Polygonia c-album )
