Stephan Báthory from Somlyó

Stephan Báthory von Somlyó (Hungarian István Báthory [ ˈiʃtvaːn ˈbaːtori ]; * 1477 ; † March 17, 1534 ) came from an influential Transylvanian noble family.

Life

After the Battle of Mohács in 1526, he supported the election of the previous Voivod of Transylvania, Johann Zápolya, as King of Hungary and was appointed Voivod of Transylvania in 1529.

He had eight children with his wife Katherina Telegdi:

  • Nicholas (* 1516)
  • Katharina (* 1516)
  • Andreas († 1563)
  • Sophia
  • Anna (? –1570), mother of the "Blood Countess" Elisabeth Báthory , married three times, 1st marriage in 1539
  • Christoph Báthory (1530–1581) ruled the Principality of Transylvania on behalf of his brother Stefan.
  • Stefan (1533–1586), first voivode (prince) of Transylvania, later king of Poland and grand prince of Lithuania
